    Understanding COVID-19 Infectiousness

What Does It Mean to Be Contagious?

Contractable means you can pass the virus to someone else. This is actually the time when the virus is replicating within your body and or you release the virons through respiratory droplets.

    How COVID-19 Spreads

COVID-19 is mainly contracted through droplets during the coughing, sneezing or talking state.
It can also remain on surfaces, but close contact with others who have the disease is the primary source of transmission. Therefore, time and space really do matter.

How Long are You Contagious After COVID-19?

Average duration of infectiousness for COVID-19

The average rule is most people are contagious 1-2 days before they look sick and stay contagious about 5-10 days after their symptoms start. People without symptoms at all may be contagious for a shorter duration, generally up to 7 days.

    Things That Might Affect Infectiousness

There are several things that affect the number of days someone stays contagious:

    • Severity of infection: People with more severe symptoms or weakened immune systems can be contagious longer.
    • Vaccination status: The vaccinated individuals often clear the virus more quickly. Their infectious period is shortened.
    • Age and general health status: Younger, healthier individuals do tend to recover faster, but this is not always the case.

    Testing and Determining Contagiousness

Types of Tests Used to Identify COVID-19

PCR is considered the most accurate and approximate method, which can find even a trace of a virus.
More rapid antigen tests have lower sensitivity. Being positive on a test does not necessarily mean you are contagious, only that the virus is there.

    When Can You Stop Quarantining?

The Centres for Disease Control and Prevention said people should isolate for at least five days since the onset of the symptoms and should wear a mask for five days upon returning to public. If you have developed symptoms of the coronavirus but tested positive and never showed any other signs, self-quarantine for five days from the time you took the test.
    Always follow local guidelines.

    Reducing the Risk of Transmission

Tips for Protecting Others While Contagious

    • Always wear a high quality mask (preferably an N95 mask) when with other people.
    • Proper airing of the area where the living takes place. You can use windows or air purifiers to do this.
    • Frequent hand-washing and disinfection of common surfaces also help.

    Prevention of Transmission in Home

If you are infectious, look for an isolation room, and an isolation bathroom, if present. This means that plates, dishes, glasses, and towels should not be shared at all. It means, that using disinfectants requires disinfection to occur more often, and prevents other people, co-workers, friends and relatives, from getting infected.

What to Do If You Think You May Be Infected for Longer Period

When to Seek a Healthcare Provider

However, if your symptoms are not getting better, or if they are getting worse, after ten days, then it is time to see your health care provider. He can decide if further tests or treatments are needed.

Understanding Long COVID and Its Implications

Do remember that long COVID doesn’t mean you can’t recover from the illness, but the risk of staying contagious remains big even after recovery. Long COVID is often a medical issue about understanding and managing it.
